DIPLOMACY AND FOREIGN POLICY
A British diplomat once remarked, “Foreign policy is what you do and diplomacy is how you do it.” This line pretty much sums up the difference between the two.
Diplomacy and foreign policy are not one
or the same things. They have completely different meanings and functions.
Foreign policy is a part of national
policy of a state and diplomacy
is a method or a way to carry out the foreign policy.
WHAT IS FOREIGN POLICY?
A foreign policy is designed by a
state for foreign interaction. It is the course of action a state adopts with
other states. A Foreign policy is always
shaped keeping in mind the national interests of a state. International relations are influenced by
foreign policies.
TOOLS OF FOREIGN POLICY
Diplomacy is a tool of foreign policy that involves negotiation and dialogue. Other methods of foreign policy which a
state may use are:
· Isolationism: This method isolates a state
from rest of the world and it does not take an active part in international
affairs.
· Collective security: It involves working in
cooperation with other states against common threats.
· Imperialism: This method focuses on creating
an empire by dominating other countries.

DIPLOMACY TYPES
Diplomacy changes form according to the need of the hour!
Some forms are discussed here.
·
Economic Diplomacy
The
main objective of economic diplomacy is enhancing the economic growth of a
country. It may include increasing FDI (foreign direct investment), increasing
exports and actively participating in international economic organizations. BRI
and CPEC are examples of economic diplomacy.
·
Digital (Electronic) diplomacy
This
form of diplomacy uses internet and digital communication technologies to solve
diplomatic conflicts. Foreign policy interests and information propaganda are
shared using social networks, blogs and global media platforms. Twitter is one
the most important tool for digital diplomacy in current time.
·
People’s Diplomacy
Another
name for people’s diplomacy is people-to-people diplomacy. This type of
diplomacy targets developing strong relations between states. Diplomats not
only meet official representatives of a country but also its citizens.
DIPLOMACY IS NEEDED FOR SURVIVAL!
Foreign
policy and diplomacy are vital for the existence of a state in this era of Globalization where each state is
somehow dependent upon the other. A good foreign policy and the right type of
diplomacy can make a country regionally stronger and economically stable. These two things have the potential to
change the future of a state.
Thus,
intelligent brains are highly needed for the formation of foreign policy and
best diplomats are required to express the foreign policy in the most suitable
form…
